Dizem que a vida começa depois dos 40. Para o aposentado Augusto Machado da Silva, ela ganhou um fôlego aos 85 anos. Casado por mais de cinco décadas, ficou viúvo há um ano e precisou reaprender a arte das descobertas. A oportunidade surgiu em março deste ano, quando um dos filhos o convidou para uma viagem até o Rio de Janeiro. Ele não apenas aceitou como se desafiou a voar de Asa Delta. O passeio chamou a atenção até mesmo dos instrutores da modalidade, que até aquele data havia recebido adeptos da prática esportiva com menos de 50 anos.
Ele comenta o feito mostrando as imagens que decoram as paredes da garagem da sua casa, localizada no Bairro Parque da Matriz, em Cachoeirinha, onde reside há 26 anos. Nelas também há imagens da trilha realizada, quase na mesma época, nas cataratas de Foz do Iguaçu no Paraná. Agora os convites são muitos para novas aventuras, que gosta de gabar-se pela coragem ausente nos mais jovens. O próximo, se Augusto perder o medo, deve ser um Cruzeiro na companhia da família. Receoso, analisa a possibilidade com cautela pelo fato de não saber nadar. “Sou como um tijolinho e se o navio afundar?”, brinca.
Mas, coragem é o que menos falta na sua trajetória. Desde os nove anos trabalha na área de carpintaria e metalurgia, quando se submeteu há várias situações de risco. Hoje, ele mantém uma oficina de produtos elaborados a partir da madeira, onde confecciona mesas, vasos para plantas, cadeiras, balanços para crianças, dentre outros objetos no melhor estilo artesanal. Nos planos está a abertura de uma loja em casa para comercializá-los, ainda que muitos deles já sejam procurados por familiares, amigos e vizinhos. A ideia é ocupar a mente e não deixar de estar ao lado daqueles que ama. Além dos três filhos, ele tem sete netos e um bisneto, que encontram espaço certo na agenda diária do novo adepto de aventuras radicais.
